Eat the history, culture and architecture of Denmark in North Jutland
North Jutland – Denmark’s aptly named “Land of Light” – offers an abundance of things to walk away from extensive, sun-drenched stretches of beach and world-class attractions such as the Viking Museum Lindholm Høje or the recently renovated Skagen Museum, in one of the many award-winning Restaurants like Mortens Kro, Svinkløv Badehotel or Villa Vest indulge in gourmet cuisine (for which the region is very famous). However, for a local taste of the region’s history, culture, architecture and delicious regional cuisine, tuck in at some of the restaurants below and you will literally discover stories to eat up on.
A taste of maritime history
Part of the Limfjord Maritime Museum in Løgstør and with a prime location over the harbor, Køkken canal followers are the perfect place to contemplate the time spent in the museum about the region’s fascinating maritime history while enjoying some of its abundant catch . With a creative menu showcasing the area’s fresh fish and shellfish, the famous Limfjord mussels, which gave rise to Løgstør’s annual mussel festival, mussel harvest and nickname “mussel town”, are not to be missed.
With the impression of the Aalborg waterfront with its impressive metallic shapes, the Utzon Center offers a glimpse into the inspired work of the world-famous architect Jørn Utzon, who in collaboration with his son Kim Utzon, his last work until he died in 2008 in old age 90 years. Conceived as a cultural center, the numerous exhibitions in the hall include two exhibition halls, the Utzon library and a work space for students of architecture and design at Aalborg University.
Denmark’s largest and oldest forest, Rold Skov, is widely considered to be one of the most enchanting forests in the country. Rich in folklore and mystery, it quietly captivates hikers and cyclists alike with its huge beeches and strangely gnarled “troll” trees, hidden burial mounds and sparkling freshwater springs. In the heart of the forest, visitors can enjoy a one-story lunch of traditional Danish cuisine in Mosskov pavilions while drinking in the breathtaking panoramic view of Lake St. Økssø and the surrounding forest. Alternatively, explore the romance of the candlelit restaurant on the edge of the forest at Rold Storkro near the Rebild Hills.
Entertainment to eat
For more forest food, head to Røverstuen, in the middle of the rye forest, where classic Danish game and pork dishes are on the menu in this cozy, relaxed restaurant that combines good food and wine with a varied music program. Local historical events.
Alternatively, with a view of the waterfront at Saeby Harbor, on the northeast coast of Jutland, Frank’s restaurant cleverly combines stylish food with a changing calendar of events, from music to famous artists to lectures by inspiring people. In addition to its extensive fresh seafood menu, the restaurant also offers a popular tapas buffet menu created from local produce.
Housing delicious bites
With a varied selection of large historic buildings ranging from castles to department stores, you won’t see some of the region’s smaller gems like the “raaling” – “little houses”. Dating back to 1552, the thatched and decorated Raalingen is one of the oldest private houses in Denmark, east of Aalborg on the east coast of North Jutland near Hou. Quietly surrounded by apple orchards, rose gardens and leafy areas with small ponds, the former farmhouse has been converted to offer a slow menu with seasonal Danish delicacies, including the popular “Raalings Brasserade” – an individual barbecue for outdoor summer restaurants.
Another great historical stop is Top Karen, near Skorping, south of Aalborg. Named for the owner who ran this lovely cafe in the late 19th century, the low ceiling rooms tell the story of this delightful home and its famous visitors through an extensive collection of photographs that can be comfortably viewed over coffee and a delicious homemade Danish pastry.
